Snoop Dogg Swears By This 2-Ingredient Midnight Snack

Lately, I’ve been a bit of a night owl, often staying up late editing the manuscript for my next cookbook. This always makes me hungry for a snack, but it has to be easy and incredibly satisfying.

It’s also become a hobby (obsession, really) of mine to uncover dishes celebrities make when they’re craving midnight snacks. A common theme I’ve discovered is toast. Stanley Tucci enjoys banana and peanut butter toast, while Gordon Ramsay salivates over toast topped with spicy baked beans. My favorite author of all time, Jane Austen, enjoyed toasties with melted cheese and egg.

Then, there’s the incredible Snoop Dogg, who satisfies his late-night cravings and his inner child with a simple two-ingredient dish: a hard-boiled egg sliced over toast.

“I put the egg in the middle of the toast like the elementary school breakfast they used to give… We couldn’t wait to get to school to get that hard-boiled egg and put it in the toast. A beautiful thing,” Snoop Dogg told Business Insider. Bet!

How To Make My Version of Snoop Dogg’s 2-Ingredient Midnight Snack

First, you’ll need to boil an egg or two, and they must be perfectly hard-boiled so they don’t end up sulfuric or have that greyish-green tinge. To achieve this, fill a small saucepan with cold water, enough to submerge an egg or two. I add a splash of vinegar and a pinch of salt—this prevents the eggs from cracking and helps the peels come off easier later.

Add the egg directly from the refrigerator, and heat the water on high heat. Once the water comes to a rolling boil, take the saucepan off the heat and cover it with a lid. Let the egg enjoy this hot bath for 10 to 11 minutes. Then, drain the hot water and add cold water and ice to the saucepan to cool the egg down. Peel the egg and slice it with a sharp knife. Season with salt and ground pepper (and, if you’re a chaotic, adventurous cook like me, sprinkle a little sugar over the egg).

Next, you’ll need toast. My favorite bread to use is almost stale milk bread. When toasted, milk bread is crispy on the exterior, but bite in, and a soft, feathery bread that melts in your mouth reveals itself. If you don’t have milk bread handy, sourdough works too, and adds tangy notes. Top the toast with the sliced egg in an even layer, and there you have it, Snoop Dogg’s beloved two-ingredient midnight snack.

Tips That Make Snoop Dogg’s Egg Toast Even Better

Sometimes, simplicity is king, but if you like channeling your inner Martha Stewart, like I do, these tips will make Snoop Dogg’s snack even better. Butter up the toasted milk bread with salted or unsalted butter. Alternatively, brush olive oil or mayonnaise over the toast.

Seasoning the eggs with salt and pepper is fine, but for more flavor, spice things up by drizzling chili crisp over the sliced eggs or topping them with chopped kimchi. Or, sprinkle the toast with your favorite furikake blend. Finally, you can turn this hard-boiled egg toast into a sandwich by topping the sliced eggs with another piece of toast.

What Snoop Dogg loved as a kid is a two-ingredient wonder that hits the spot when you have a late-night craving or need a quick, satisfying bite. Whether you keep it classic with just the two ingredients or give it your own spin, it’s a winning creation.
